A Canada Goose parka is built to last decades, but a single wrong wash can flatten the down, stain the leather patch, or wreck the coyote fur ruff. The good news: most of them are machine washable at home if you follow the care label and skip a few common mistakes.

Quick answer

Check the care label first. If it says machine wash, remove the fur trim, wash the shell cold on a gentle cycle in a front-loading machine with a mild or down-specific detergent, skip fabric softener and bleach, then tumble dry low with clean dryer balls until the down is fully dry and lofted again. Never send it to a standard dry cleaner using PERC solvent, and keep leather trim away from soaking.

Key takeaways:

Why parkas get ruined in the first place

Down is just clusters of soft feather fibers that trap air. That trapped air is the warmth. Anything that mats those clusters together, hot water, harsh solvent, or too much detergent, leaves you with cold spots and a jacket that looks half deflated.

Three things do the most damage:

  1. Old-school dry cleaning. Perchloroethylene (PERC), the solvent most conventional cleaners use, strips the natural oils out of down. The clusters clump, the loft drops, and the jacket never fully recovers.
  2. Heat. High dryer heat scorches the shell coating and can melt synthetic trims.
  3. Wrong machine. A top-loader with a center agitator twists and pulls the baffles that hold the down in place.

Avoid those three and you are most of the way there.

Step 1: Read the care label

This sounds obvious, but Canada Goose makes a lot of styles and they do not all clean the same way. Down-filled parkas are usually washable. Certain shells, fur-heavy designs, or pieces with large leather panels may say “spot clean only” or “professional clean.” Follow whatever the label says over anything you read online, including this.

While you are at it, empty the pockets and zip up all the zippers so nothing snags.

Step 2: Remove the fur trim

The coyote fur ruff on most parkas snaps off. Take it off before the jacket goes anywhere near water. Real fur mats and stiffens badly when it gets soaked and machine-dried.

To clean the ruff on its own:

If the trim has a stubborn stain, that is a job worth handing to a professional rather than experimenting.

Step 3: Wash the shell

SettingWhat to use
MachineFront-loading only, no agitator
WaterCold or lukewarm
CycleGentle / delicate
DetergentMild liquid or a down-specific wash, small amount
Never useBleach, fabric softener, hot water

Turn the jacket inside out if you can, close all zippers, and wash it alone or with one or two similar items so it has room to move. Fabric softener coats down and reduces loft, so leave it out. When the cycle ends, run one extra rinse. Leftover detergent is a top reason down stays clumped.

Do not wring or twist the jacket to squeeze water out. Press it gently instead.

Step 4: Dry it properly

This is the step people rush, and it is the one that decides how the parka looks afterward.

The jacket is only done when there is zero dampness left in the baffles. Even slightly damp down can develop mildew and a musty smell. Once it is fully dry, give it a good shake and the loft should come back.

What about the leather trim?

Some parkas carry a leather Canada Goose patch on the sleeve. Water and detergent can stain, stiffen, or warp leather, so keep that patch out of a full soak whenever possible. Wipe it with a slightly damp cloth and let it air dry. If your jacket has significant leather detailing, that pushes it toward professional cleaning rather than a home wash.

Things to never do

Don’tWhy
Dry clean with PERCStrips down oils, permanently reduces warmth
Use bleachDamages fibers and discolors the shell
Add fabric softenerCoats down and kills loft
Use high heatScorches the shell, melts trims
Machine wash the furMats and stiffens it
Store it dampInvites mildew and odor

When to leave it to a professional

Home washing works for a routine refresh. But some situations are worth handing off: a jacket with heavy leather detailing, set-in oil or road-salt stains, a fur ruff that needs real attention, or simply a coat you would rather not gamble on.

Here is the part most people miss. “Professional cleaning” does not mean any dry cleaner. A shop using conventional PERC solvent can do the same damage you were trying to avoid. What you want is a cleaner that handles down with a gentler process. Gibson’s uses GreenEarth silicone-based cleaning, which is PERC-free and far kinder to the natural oils in down, and we are one of only two authorized Canada Goose cleaners in Ontario. For reference, premium down coats are cleaned at a flat rate, with a small step up for coats that include leather trim, so the fur and leather get the right treatment instead of a one-size wash.

Common questions

Can I wash a Canada Goose jacket in a regular top-loading machine?

Better not to. The center agitator can twist the baffles and shift the down. A front-loader is the safe choice, and a laundromat usually has one if you do not.

How often should I wash it?

Only when it actually needs it. Down does not need frequent washing, and each wash is a small amount of wear. Spot clean small marks between full washes and you will get years more out of the jacket.

My down is clumped after washing. Did I ruin it?

Usually not. Clumping almost always means it is not fully dry, or detergent is still trapped inside. Run it through the dryer again on low with dryer balls, breaking up the clumps by hand as you go, and the loft typically returns.

Treated right, a Canada Goose parka easily lasts more than a decade. Wash it rarely, wash it gently, dry it fully, and when in doubt, let someone who cleans down for a living take it from there.
